Years Between Dates Calculator

Enter any two calendar dates and get the exact span between them in years, months, and days, plus the total in days, full months, and decimal years. Order doesn't matter — the tool sorts the dates for you.

Example: with First date 2018-01-01 · Second date 2026-01-01 → Exact span: 8 years, 0 months, 0 days.

Calendar math, not 365-day math: one year means the same month and day the following year, however many days that takes. Leap years are handled automatically.

How years between two dates are actually counted

The everyday answer to '2018 to 2026' is subtraction: 8 years. That works when both dates share the same month and day. Otherwise you need anniversary logic: a full year is complete only when the later date has reached the same month and day as the earlier one. March 15, 2018 to July 14, 2026 is 8 full years plus the 3 months and 29 days beyond the March 15 anniversary.

Decimal years divide the total day count by 365.2425, the average Gregorian year. That's why 2,922 days shows as 8.00 years even though two of those years had 366 days — the average absorbs the leap days.

How it’s calculated

Exact span uses borrow arithmetic on (year, month, day): if the day difference is negative, borrow the length of the month preceding the end date; if the month difference is negative, borrow 12 months from the years. Total days = round((end − start) / 86,400,000 ms) with both dates at noon. Decimal years = total days ÷ 365.2425 (mean Gregorian year). Full months = years × 12 + months.

Dates are treated as pure calendar dates in one time zone; times of day are ignored.

20202730
202241,461
202462,191
202682,922

Computed by calendar count; leap days in 2020, 2024, and 2028 account for the extra days beyond 365 per year.

Common mistakes

  • Multiplying years by 365 — 2018 to 2026 contains two leap days, so it's 2,922 days, not 2,920.
  • Counting a year as complete before the anniversary date: Mar 15, 2018 to Mar 14, 2026 is 7 years, not 8.
  • Mixing US and ISO date order (07/04 vs 04/07) when typing dates by hand.
  • Expecting decimal years to equal whole years exactly — 8 calendar years is 8.00 only on average.

Frequently asked questions

How many years is 2018 to 2026?

From January 1, 2018 to January 1, 2026 is exactly 8 years — 2,922 days, because 2020 and 2024 each add a leap day to the 8 × 365 = 2,920 baseline.

What formula does the calculator use?

Years = anniversary count (same month and day), then months and days by borrow arithmetic; total days = (end − start) / 86,400,000 ms; decimal years = days ÷ 365.2425.

Why do I get 0 years for Feb 29, 2020 to Feb 28, 2021?

The anniversary of Feb 29 hasn't strictly arrived by Feb 28, so the exact span reads 0 years, 11 months, 30 days — 365 days total. Whether Feb 28 'counts' as the anniversary is a convention; this tool is strict.

Does the order of the dates matter?

No. If the second date is earlier, the tool swaps them and notes it, so the span is always reported as a positive quantity.
