Both times convert to minutes since midnight (12:00 AM). The target minus the current time is the wait; if that comes out zero or negative, the target already happened today, so the calculator adds 24 hours and counts to tomorrow’s occurrence. From 12:00 PM, 4:00 PM is 4 hr 0 min away, 2:00 PM is 2 hr, and 9:00 PM is 9 hr.
Minutes matter: at 12:30 PM, 5:00 PM is 4 hr 30 min away — 270 minutes, not “about 4.5 hours-ish.” The overnight case works the way you’d hope, too: at 9:00 PM, 7:00 AM is 10 hr 0 min away because the count rolls past midnight. Use the decimal-hours row when you need the gap for a timesheet: 4 hr 30 min = 4.50 hours.
How it’s calculated
Times convert to minutes since midnight using 12-hour rules (12 AM = 0 minutes, 12 PM = 720). Wait = target − now; when the result is zero or negative the target has already occurred today, so 1,440 minutes (24 hours) are added to count to its next occurrence tomorrow. Output is floor(wait ÷ 60) hours plus wait mod 60 minutes; decimal hours = wait ÷ 60.

Common mistakes
- Treating 12:00 PM as midnight — noon is 12 PM; midnight is 12 AM.
- Reading 4.5 decimal hours as 4 hr 50 min — it is 4 hr 30 min.
- Forgetting the count rolls to tomorrow when the target already passed today, so the answer can exceed 12 hours.

Exactly 4 hr 0 min, which is 240 minutes. From 1:00 PM it’s 3 hours; from 9:00 AM it’s 7 hours.

What if the target time already passed today?
