Price per Pound Calculator
Find the true unit price of anything sold by weight. Enter the total price and the weight (pounds, ounces, kilograms, or grams) to get the cost per pound, per ounce, and per kilogram so you can compare package sizes.
Example: with Total price ($) 12.99 · Weight 3 · Weight unit pounds (lb) → Price per pound: $4.33 /lb.
- Price per ounce$0.27 /oz
- Price per kilogram$9.55 /kg
Computed by the calculator below using its default values. Change any input to see your own numbers.
Unit price = total price ÷ weight. Convert everything to the same weight unit first, then divide — the store shelf tag does the same thing.
How unit pricing exposes the real deal
Bigger packages are usually — but not always — cheaper per pound. Stores print unit prices on shelf tags precisely because the sticker price alone hides which option costs less. When two sizes use different units, say a 12 oz bag and a 2.5 lb bag, you cannot compare them until both are on the same footing.
Converting to price per pound (or per ounce for small items) puts every option on one scale. Once you see $4.00/lb next to $6.65/lb, the choice is obvious even when the larger bag has the bigger sticker price.
How it’s calculated
Price per pound = total price ÷ weight in pounds. Weights convert to pounds first: 1 oz = 0.0625 lb, 1 kg = 2.20462262 lb, 1 g = 0.00220462262 lb. Price per ounce = price per pound ÷ 16; price per kilogram = price per pound × 2.20462262.
Assumes the priced weight is the net (edible) weight. Packaging, brine, breading, or bone shift the real cost per usable pound.
Which package actually costs less
| Item | Price | Weight | Price per lb |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small pack | $4.99 | 12 oz | $6.65 |
| Family pack | $9.99 | 2.5 lb | $4.00 |
| Bulk pack | $18.99 | 5 lb | $3.80 |
Computed as price ÷ weight in pounds; a worked example, not real store prices.
Common mistakes
- Comparing sticker prices instead of unit prices when package sizes differ.
- Forgetting to convert ounces to pounds — 16 oz is 1 lb, not 1/16.
- Ignoring drained or net weight, so brine or packaging inflates the apparent value.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate price per pound?
Divide the total price by the weight in pounds. For a $12.99 item weighing 3 lb, that is 12.99 ÷ 3 = $4.33 per pound.
How do I convert ounces to a per-pound price?
Divide the price by the weight in pounds, where pounds = ounces ÷ 16. A $5 item at 8 oz is $5 ÷ 0.5 lb = $10 per pound.
Is a bigger package always cheaper per pound?
Usually, but not always. Promotions and store brands can make a smaller size cheaper per pound, which is exactly why comparing unit prices is worth it.
What is price per ounce good for?
Small or premium items like spices, coffee, and meat are easier to compare per ounce. It is just the per-pound price divided by 16.
