Subtract your age from the current year: birth year = current year − age. That works only if you’ve already had your birthday this year. If it’s still ahead, subtract one more, because you’re still carrying last year’s age.
Worked examples as of 2026: if you’re 16, you were born in 2010 (birthday passed) or 2009 (not yet). If you’re 21, that’s 2005 or 2004; at 22, 2004 or 2003. Flip it around and 18-year-olds in 2026 were born in 2008 or 2007 — handy for a quick ID check. When someone only tells you an age, the honest answer is always those two consecutive years; you need the birthday, or at least whether it’s passed, to pin down one.
How it’s calculated
Birth year = year of the as-of date − age when the birthday has already occurred that year; subtract one more year when it hasn’t. With the not-sure option the calculator reports both consecutive candidate years. The next-birthday row adds one to your age and names the calendar year that birthday falls in. Only the year of the as-of date is used; set it to today for a current answer.
