How month arithmetic works

Adding months keeps the day-of-month and moves the month counter: July 13, 2026 + 6 months = January 13, 2027 (a Wednesday), crossing into the new year. Six months ago from that same day was January 13, 2026. Because months differ in length, the day can’t always survive: January 31 + 6 months lands safely on July 31, but August 31 + 6 months points at February 31, which doesn’t exist — the standard rollover used here carries the overflow into March, giving March 3, 2027 (February 2027 has 28 days).

That rollover is exactly how JavaScript and most spreadsheet date engines behave. If you’d rather clamp to the month’s last day (February 28 instead of March 3), do that deliberately — leases and contracts usually spell out which rule applies. As a rule of thumb for 6 months from July: same day-of-month, January of the next year.

How it’s calculated

Target = Date.UTC(year, month index ± N, day) evaluated with native calendar rollover: the month counter shifts by N and any day overflow (such as February 31) rolls into the following month. Both directions are computed from the same input date; weekdays come from the resulting dates. Month counts must be whole numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming 6 months is exactly 180 days — July 13, 2026 to January 13, 2027 is 184 days.
  • Expecting Aug 31 + 6 months to give Feb 28 — the standard rollover used here gives Mar 3, 2027 instead.
  • Counting months as 30 days each in contracts — state calendar months or a day count explicitly to avoid disputes.

Frequently asked questions

What is 6 months from today?

From July 13, 2026, six months ahead is Wednesday, January 13, 2027. Enter your actual date and the result updates instantly.

What day was 6 months ago?

Six months back from July 13, 2026 is Tuesday, January 13, 2026 — same day-of-month with the month counter moved back six. The earlier-date row always shows this.

What month was it 6 months ago?

Count back six on the month wheel: July → January, August → February, December → June. The year drops by one whenever you cross back over January 1.

What happens with month-end dates like August 31?

February 31 doesn’t exist, so the overflow rolls forward: August 31, 2026 + 6 months = March 3, 2027. January 31 + 6 months is fine, because July has 31 days.
