How to calculate win percentage

Win percentage = wins ÷ total games × 100. A 30–20 record is 30 ÷ 50 = 60%, written .600 in standings. When ties are possible, count each as half a win: (wins + 0.5 × ties) ÷ games. That’s how the NFL computes it — a 9–5–2 season is (9 + 1) ÷ 16 = 62.5%, quoted as .625. Baseball simply has no ties, so its formula is the same with ties at zero.

Win rate in games and esports is identical math per match: 57 wins in 100 ranked games is a 57% win rate. Don’t confuse it with the win/loss ratio, which divides wins by losses only — a 30–20 record has a 1.50 W/L ratio but a 60% win rate. A ratio above 1.00 always means a winning record.

How it’s calculated

Win percentage = (wins + 0.5 × ties) ÷ (wins + losses + ties) × 100 — the half-win tie convention used by the NFL. The standings form is the same fraction rounded to three decimals (.600). Win/loss ratio = wins ÷ losses, ignoring ties.

Common mistakes

  • Dividing wins by losses when you want a percentage — 30 ÷ 20 gives the 1.50 W/L ratio, not the 60% win rate.
  • Leaving ties out of the game count — an 8–6–2 team is .563 with ties counted as half-wins, not .571.
  • Reading small samples as skill — 2–0 (100%) is weaker evidence than 45–15 (75%).

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate win percentage?

Divide wins by total games and multiply by 100: 12 wins in 20 games is 60%. With ties, add half a win for each: (12 + 0.5 × 2) ÷ 22 ≈ 59.1%.

How do ties affect winning percentage?

In the NFL convention a tie counts as half a win: a 10–6–1 team is (10 + 0.5) ÷ 17 = .618. Some leagues instead ignore ties entirely.

What is the difference between win percentage and win/loss ratio?

Win percentage divides by all games; the W/L ratio divides wins by losses only. A 15–5 record is a 75% win rate but a 3.00 ratio.

What is a good win rate?

Anything over 50% is a winning record. In matchmaking that pairs similar players, a sustained 55–60% is strong; in MLB, a .600 season usually leads the division.
