Tile is sold by the box, so the useful number is how many boxes to buy. Enter tiles per box (on the carton) and price per box to turn the raw tile count into an order and a cost. Add 10% waste for straight layouts and 15–20% for diagonal patterns, and keep a few spares from the same lot for repairs.
How itβs calculated
Tiles = area Γ· (tile area incl. grout gap) Γ (1 + waste). Boxes = tiles Γ· tiles per box, rounded up. Cost = boxes Γ price per box, or tiles Γ price per tile if no box price is set.

Common mistakes
- Skipping a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
- Forgetting diagonal patterns need more waste.
Frequently asked questions
How much waste should I add?
10% for simple layouts; 15–20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns and rooms with many cuts.
How do I find tiles per box?
It's printed on the carton and the product listing. Enter it to convert the tile count into boxes.
Should I buy an extra box?
Yes — one spare box from the same dye lot protects against future cracks and discontinued lines.
What is the grout gap for?
It adds the tile spacing (usually 1/16″ to 1/2″) to each tile's footprint so the tile count accounts for grout lines. Use a negative value for overlapping tiles like roofing or siding.
Can I price by the tile instead of by the box?
Yes — leave price per box at 0 and enter a price per tile instead; the cost estimate will use tiles × price per tile.
