Square Footage Calculator

Measure the area of a room or space. Enter the dimensions (and how many identical areas) to get square feet, yards, and meters — plus total cost if you add a price.

Example: with Shape Rectangle · Dimension unit Feet (ft) · Length 12 ft · Width 10 ft → Total square feet: 120.0 sq ft.

  • Square yards13.33 sq yd
  • Square meters11.15 sq m

Measuring odd shapes

Square footage is simply length times width. Use the Shape selector to switch to a rectangle border (like a garden bed or picture-frame edge), a circle, a circle border / annulus (a ring shape, such as a round patio around a pool), a triangle, or a trapezoid — each with its own dimension fields and a choice of ft, in, yd, m, or cm. For a truly irregular room, split the space into rectangles, calculate each, and add them up — the 'number of areas' field helps when they're identical. Multiply by a price per square foot to budget flooring, tile, paint, or rent.

How it’s calculated

Area = length × width × number of areas. 1 sq yard = 9 sq ft; 1 sq metre ≈ 10.76 sq ft.

Other shapes: rectangle border area = outer area − inner area (inner dims shrink by 2× the border width on each side); circle area = π×(diameter/2)²; circle border/annulus area = outer circle area − inner circle area (inner radius = outer radius − border width); triangle area = base×height/2; trapezoid area = (base1+base2)/2×height. Non-feet dimension units are converted to feet first (in÷12, yd×3, m×3.28084, cm×0.0328084) so every shape's area lands in square feet before the sq yd / sq m / cost conversions.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring an irregular room as one rectangle.
  • Mixing feet and inches in the dimensions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I handle an irregular room?

Divide it into rectangles, compute each separately, and sum the results.

How many square feet in a square yard?

Nine. One square yard = 3 ft × 3 ft = 9 square feet.

Can I price materials with this?

Yes — enter a price per square foot to get a quick material or rent estimate.
