How this checkup works

Each metric compares your number to the U.S. average or median for your age band: income from the Census/BLS, net worth from the Federal Reserve's Survey of Consumer Finances, retirement balances from Vanguard's How America Saves, and credit score from Experian's age data. These are benchmarks, not targets — where you are in life matters more than any single average.

Frequently asked questions

Is it bad to be below average for my age?

Not necessarily — averages hide huge variation, and a late start on one metric is common and recoverable. Use it as a signal, not a scoreboard.

Why compare to average and not a target?

Because 'normal for my age' is the question most people actually have. Targets (like 15% savings) show up in our other checkups.
