Both units are fractions of the liter: a milliliter is one thousandth of it, a microliter one millionth. Multiplying mL by 1,000 gives µL — 1.5 mL = 1,500 µL, 0.1 mL = 100 µL, 5 mL = 5,000 µL. Going back, divide: 250 µL = 0.25 mL. Move the decimal three places and you’re done.

The conversion matters at the bench because pipettes are sized in µL: a P200 tops out at 200 µL (0.2 mL) and a P1000 at 1,000 µL (1 mL). A protocol calling for 0.5 mL means 500 µL — mid-range for a P1000. A microliter is also one cubic millimeter, which is why 1 mL = 1 cm³ (a cc) = 1,000 mm³.
