Jeans Size Calculator
Find your jeans size from a tape measure instead of a fitting room. Enter waist and hip in inches or centimeters, pick women's or men's sizing, and get a US misses size, a W (waist-inch) size, or a men's W × L size plus a fit-cut suggestion.
Example: with Sizing system Women's (US misses + W size) · Natural waist measurement 28 · Hip measurement (fullest point) 38 · Inseam (for men's L) 30 · Measurement unit inches → Jeans size: US 8 (misses).

US misses numeric sizes from a composite denim size chart; W sizes equal your waist measurement in inches. Brands vary by an inch or more — vanity sizing is real. Always check the brand's own chart before buying.
How jeans sizing actually works
There are three systems on denim tags. Men's jeans are the honest one: W × L, where W is the waist in inches and L is the inseam. Women's jeans use either the same W number (common in premium denim) or US misses numeric sizes (0, 2, 4...), which map to body measurements through a chart — and every brand draws that chart a little differently. This calculator uses a composite of common US misses denim charts: a 28 in waist lands around a size 8, with each size step worth about one inch of waist up to size 10 and about 1.5 in after that.
Vanity sizing means mass-market brands often label a garment one or even two sizes smaller than this chart, while premium denim runs closer to true waist inches. Measure your natural waist (narrowest point) and your low waist where jeans actually sit — mid-rise jeans fit between the two. When in doubt, trust the W number over the misses number.
Why the hip measurement matters
Denim has little give through the seat, so the hip-to-waist difference decides the cut more than the size number does. Around 10 in of difference is what standard blocks are drafted for. At 12 in or more, standard jeans that fit your hips will gap at the waist — look for curvy fits, which cut a smaller waist on the same hip. Under 9 in, straight or athletic fits avoid excess fabric through the seat.
How it’s calculated
Women's: US misses size from a composite denim chart (waist in inches → size): 23→00, 24→0, 25→2, 26→4, 27→6, 28→8, 29→10, 30.5→12, 32→14, 33.5→16, 35→18, 36.5→20, 38→22, 39.5→24; the closest chart waist wins. W size = waist rounded to the nearest inch. Men's: W = waist and L = inseam, each rounded to the nearest inch. Centimeters are converted at 1 in = 2.54 cm exactly. Fit check = hip − waist: 12 in or more suggests curvy, about 10-12 standard, under 10 straight.
US misses sizing is a convention, not a standard — brands deviate from this chart by an inch or more in either direction (vanity sizing), so treat the result as a starting size to try, not a guarantee.

Common mistakes
- Measuring over clothes or sucking in — measure your bare natural waist, relaxed, tape level.
- Using your natural-waist number for low-rise jeans, which sit 2-3 in lower where you are wider.
- Assuming a size 8 in one brand is a size 8 in another — vanity sizing shifts charts by 1-2 sizes.
- Ignoring the hip: jeans must clear your hips first; size for hips and tailor the waist if needed.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert waist inches to a women's jeans size?
On the composite US misses chart used here, size = the closest chart waist: 26 in is about a size 4, 28 in a size 8, 30.5 in a size 12. In W sizing, the size simply equals your waist in inches, so a 28 in waist is a W28.
What size is a 30 inch waist in jeans?
W30 in waist-inch sizing. On the misses chart it falls between a 10 (29 in) and a 12 (30.5 in) — closer to the 12. In men's jeans it is a straightforward W30.
Why do my measurements give different sizes in different brands?
US women's sizing has no enforced standard. Brands size to their own fit blocks and many deliberately label small (vanity sizing). The chart here is a middle-of-the-road composite, so expect to move one size in either direction by brand.
Do I measure my natural waist or where jeans sit?
Measure both. Size charts (including this one) are built on the natural waist — the narrowest point. But mid- and low-rise jeans sit below it, so also check the brand's rise and, for W sizing, measure where that rise will actually sit.
How much does denim stretch?
Jeans with 1-2% elastane relax about half an inch to an inch in the waist with wear; rigid 100% cotton denim can stretch a full inch but takes weeks. If you are between sizes in stretch denim, size down.
