Gematria gives each letter a number and sums them. Simple uses A=1 to Z=26; English multiplies each of those by 6; the Hebrew (Jewish) cipher uses traditional place values.

What gematria does

Gematria is the practice of turning letters into numbers and reading meaning into the totals. It began with the Hebrew alphabet, where each letter already carried a numeric value, and has since been adapted to the Latin alphabet in several competing schemes. Type a word and the tool sums its letters under three of the most common ciphers at once.

Words that share a total are said to be linked — the appeal is finding phrases that add up the same way. It is wordplay and numerology, popular in puzzles, study, and online communities, rather than a mathematical result with a single right answer.

Three ciphers, three totals

The Simple cipher is the most intuitive: A is 1, B is 2, on up to Z at 26. The English cipher takes those same ordinal values and multiplies each by 6, so every Simple total scales up sixfold. The Hebrew (Jewish) cipher maps Latin letters onto the traditional Hebrew place values of 1 through 9, then 10 through 90, then 100 upward, which is why its totals jump around.

Because the schemes differ, one word yields three numbers. This tool reports all three so you can compare, and ignores spaces, digits, and punctuation — only A to Z letters are scored.

How it’s calculated

Letters are scored case-insensitively; non-letters are ignored. Simple (ordinal): a=1, b=2, … z=26. English: the ordinal value × 6, so a=6 … z=156. Hebrew (Jewish): a–i = 1–9; k,l,m,n,o,p,q,r,s = 10,20,30,40,50,60,70,80,90; t,u,x = 100,200,300; y,z = 400,500; j=600; v=700; w=900. Each result is the sum over all letters.

Gematria is a symbolic word game, not a proof system. Several English ciphers exist; the values here follow the widely used Simple, English, and Jewish schemes and will differ from other conventions.

Frequently asked questions

How is a gematria value calculated?

Each letter is given a number and the numbers are summed. In the Simple cipher A=1 through Z=26, so a five-letter word like Hello adds 8+5+12+12+15 = 52.

What is the difference between Simple and English gematria?

Simple uses the plain ordinal position, A=1 to Z=26. English gematria multiplies each of those values by 6, so every English total is exactly six times the Simple total.

What is Hebrew or Jewish gematria?

It maps letters onto the traditional Hebrew place values — units 1–9, tens, then hundreds. Applied to Latin letters it is the common Jewish cipher, which is why its totals are larger and less even.

Does capitalization or punctuation matter?

No. The tool lowercases everything and ignores spaces, digits, and punctuation, so only the A to Z letters contribute to each total.

Is gematria mathematically meaningful?
