Learn moreFuel is where EVs win
Electric vehicles cost more up front but far less to fuel and maintain. On energy alone, charging at home typically runs a third of the cost of gasoline. Over years and tens of thousands of miles, that gap adds up to thousands — before counting lower maintenance.
How it’s calculated & sources
EV cost = miles ÷ efficiency × electricity rate. Gas cost = miles ÷ MPG × gas price. We show annual and 5-year fuel savings plus each car’s cost per mile.
Benchmark: EVs typically cost ~4–5¢/mile to fuel versus ~12–15¢/mile for gas (U.S. DOE).

Worked example
Driving 12,000 miles a year, an EV at 3.5 mi/kWh and 17¢/kWh costs about $583, versus $1,400 of gas in a 30-mpg car — saving roughly $817 a year, or $4,000 over five years.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include the purchase price or maintenance?
No — it’s fuel only. EVs also save on maintenance (no oil changes, less brake wear), while gas cars are cheaper to buy. Add those to get total cost of ownership.
What if I rely on public charging?
Public DC fast charging can cost several times home rates, shrinking the savings. Bump the electricity rate up to model a charging mix.
