What drives carpet cost

Installed carpet has three layers of cost: the carpet itself, the padding underneath, and labor. Carpet is sold by the square foot or yard (1 yd² = 9 ft²), and you should always buy ~10% extra for waste, seams and matching.

How it’s calculated & sources

Total = (length × width) × (1 + waste%) × (carpet + pad + install price per sq ft). Square yards = padded area ÷ 9.

Benchmark: installed carpet typically runs $3–7 per square foot all-in (material, pad and labor) — HomeAdvisor / Angi cost data, 2025.

Worked example

A 15×12 ft room (180 ft²) with 10% waste at $5.10/ft² all-in comes to about $1,010 — squarely mid-range.

Frequently asked questions

Should I measure in feet or yards?

Measure the room in feet, then the calculator converts to square yards for you. Carpet rolls are usually 12 ft wide.

Why add waste?

Rooms are rarely exact multiples of the roll width, and seams, doorways and pattern matching create offcuts. 10% is a safe default.
