Army Body Fat Calculator (2023 One-Site Method)
Estimate your body fat the way the U.S. Army now does it: the one-site tape method from ALARACT 046/2023 uses only your weight and abdominal circumference at the navel. Enter your numbers to get your percent body fat and an instant pass/fail check against the AR 600-9 maximums for your age and sex.
How you compare
How the 2023 Army tape test works
In June 2023 the Army replaced its old multi-site tape method with a single measurement: abdominal circumference at the belly button, combined with body weight in a sex-specific regression equation. Graders take at least three abdominal measurements, average them, and round to the nearest 0.5 inch; weight is rounded to the nearest pound, and the final body-fat figure to the nearest whole percent. Soldiers who score 540+ on the ACFT with 80 points per event skip the tape entirely, and anyone who fails may request one supplemental scan (DXA, BIA, or Bod-Pod-style ADP) before being enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program.
How it’s calculated
Men: % body fat = −26.97 − (0.12 × weight in lb) + (1.99 × abdomen in inches). Women: % body fat = −9.15 − (0.015 × weight in lb) + (1.27 × abdomen in inches). Metric entries are converted (1 kg = 2.2046 lb, 1 in = 2.54 cm) before applying the equations from ALARACT 046/2023, Army Body Fat Assessment for the Army Body Composition Program (June 12, 2023). Standards table: AR 600-9.
Educational estimate only — not an official measurement, medical exam, or fitness determination. Official taping must be performed by trained graders under AR 600-9 procedures; body-fat equations carry real error bars for individuals. See a clinician before major diet or training changes.

Worked example
A 25-year-old male soldier weighing 180 lb with a 34-inch abdomen: −26.97 − (0.12 × 180) + (1.99 × 34) = 19.09, which the Army rounds to 19%. His age-band (21–27) maximum is 22%, so he passes with about 3 points to spare. The directive’s own samples work the same way: a 210 lb man with a 35-inch abdomen computes to 17.48 → 17%, and a 165 lb woman with a 30-inch abdomen to 26.475 → 26%.
Common mistakes
- Measuring the waist at the narrowest point — the Army site is at the navel, arms relaxed at your sides, after a normal exhale.
- Using one measurement instead of averaging at least three, each rounded to the nearest 0.5 inch.
- Sucking in or wearing compression garments; the directive explicitly prohibits girdle-like undergarments.
- Comparing this result to Navy-method or DXA numbers one-for-one — each method has its own bias.
Where it is used
- Pre-checking yourself before a unit record height/weight and tape assessment.
- Recruiters and future soldiers gauging distance to accession standards.
- Tracking cut progress toward an age-band maximum before an ACFT cycle.
- National Guard and Reserve soldiers, who fall under the same directive.
Frequently asked questions
Is this the official Army body fat test?
It uses the official one-site equations and standards from ALARACT 046/2023 (Army Body Fat Assessment for the Army Body Composition Program), but an official assessment must be taped by trained unit members, use the average of at least three measurements, and be recorded on DA Form 5500/5501. Use this to preview where you stand.
Why doesn’t the calculator ask for height or neck size?
The June 2023 update replaced the old multi-site method (height, neck, waist, hip) with a one-site method that uses only body weight and abdominal circumference at the navel. Height still matters for the separate screening weight table, but not for the body-fat equation itself.
What body fat percentage do I need to pass?
Maximums by age under AR 600-9: 17–20 years 20% (men) / 30% (women); 21–27 years 22% / 32%; 28–39 years 24% / 34%; 40 and over 26% / 36%. The calculator flags pass or fail against your age and sex automatically.
Can I skip the tape test with a good ACFT score?
Yes. Under the 2023 directive, soldiers who score 540 or higher on the record ACFT with at least 80 points in every event are exempt from the body-fat assessment for that record test cycle.
What happens if I fail the tape test?
You are flagged, but you may request one supplemental body-fat assessment (DXA, bioelectrical impedance, or air-displacement plethysmography at a government-approved facility) no earlier than 24 hours after the failed tape. Passing the supplemental test removes the flag; otherwise you are enrolled in the Army Body Composition Program.
