From tiles to boxes to budget

Tile is sold by the box, so the useful number is how many boxes to buy. Enter tiles per box (on the carton) and price per box to turn the raw tile count into an order and a cost. Add 10% waste for straight layouts and 15–20% for diagonal patterns, and keep a few spares from the same lot for repairs.

How it’s calculated

Tiles = area Γ· tile area Γ— (1 + waste). Boxes = tiles Γ· tiles per box, rounded up.

Results update as you type and are estimates, not professional advice β€” verify important decisions with a qualified professional.

Worked example

A 10x10 floor with 12-inch tiles and 10% waste needs ~111 tiles; enter tiles-per-box to get boxes.

Common mistakes

  • Skipping a waste allowance for cuts and breakage.
  • Forgetting diagonal patterns need more waste.

Where it is used

  • Ordering floor or wall tile with the right overage.
  • Turning a tile count into boxes and cost.
