These metrics answer different questions: CPM is what you pay for reach, CPC for a click, CTR measures how compelling the ad is, CPA what a result costs, and ROAS whether the campaign makes money.
How it’s calculated & sources
CPM = spend ÷ impressions × 1,000. CPC = spend ÷ clicks. CTR = clicks ÷ impressions. CPA = spend ÷ conversions. ROAS = (conversions × revenue) ÷ spend.
Benchmark: display CTR often ~0.5–1%, search CTR ~3–5%; a common profitability target is ROAS ≥ 4:1 (industry medians).

Worked example
$5,000 over 500,000 impressions and 7,500 clicks is a $10 CPM, $0.67 CPC and 1.5% CTR. At 300 conversions worth $60, CPA is $16.67 and ROAS is 3.6×.
Frequently asked questions
What’s a good CTR?
It depends on channel and placement. Search ads run far higher than display. Compare against your own history and the channel norm.
Is ROAS the same as profit?
No — ROAS is revenue ÷ spend, before product and overhead costs. Factor margin in to judge true profitability.
