Save hard early, then coast

Coast FIRE flips the script: front-load your investing, and once you hit your coast number, compounding alone carries you to a full retirement — you only need to cover current expenses. It buys freedom to downshift, switch careers, or stop retirement saving sooner than full FIRE.

How it’s calculated & sources

Full FIRE number = annual spending ÷ safe withdrawal rate. Coast number = that figure discounted back to today at your real return over the years until retirement. If your current savings exceed it, you’ve coasted.

Benchmark: Coast FIRE = the amount that compounds into your full FIRE number by retirement with zero further contributions.

Worked example

At 32, wanting $1.5M by 65 at a 5% real return, the coast number is about $300,000. Have that invested and you can stop adding — it should grow into the full target.

Frequently asked questions

Do I stop saving entirely?

You can stop saving for retirement once you hit the coast number, but you still need income for today’s expenses. Many use it to take a lower-stress job.

What return should I use?

Use a real (inflation-adjusted) return like ~5% so the target is in today’s dollars. Lower it to be conservative.
